jans_con_socialdem.jpg US military base contract to be ratified today despite lost election - Jan Tamas's appeal

Despite heavy losses in last week's Regional and Senate elections, the Czech government intends to have contract for US military base ratified today. The radar base, right outside Prague is pivotal to US NMD system for space militarization and control.

Parliament scheduled to vote contract today and Senate on Thursday October 30. Government wants to take advantage of outgoing Senators' vote, even though they no longer represent the will of the Czech people. A silent coup d'etat.  A protest is scheduled tomorrow at 8:00 am outside the Parliament building in Prague and in front of Czech embassies throughout Europe. 70% OF CZECHS OPPOSE BASE
Ever since secret agreements between the Czech and US governments were divulged by Jan Tamas in 2006, 70% of Czechs have taken a stand against this project and have not been swayed by the million dollar political propaganda in favour of it.

Last May, Jan Bednar and Jan Tamas went on a 20 day protest hunger strike. A relay hunger strike has continued since then. Every single day, a Czech personality - artists, politicians, scientists, doctors, sportspeople - will fast for 24 hours to ask for a one year pause before final decision on US base construction.

The protest has spread to other European countries and the issue has been addressed by the European Parliament. No official stand has been taken on this issue even though it is crucial to Europe's future.

The dissent has caused the fall of the government coalition parties in last week's elections. Government's decision to force the contract's ratification means political suicide for these parties. This would be hard to understand if not for documents circulating on the internet showing close ties between certain Czech politicians and companies standing to gain with the construction of the new US military base: http://www.nenasili.cz/cs/2026_kdo-prosazuje-radar-v-cr   (Czech only).

REQUEST

"With the complicit silence of the most important media, including state television, we are impotent witnesses to the darkest page of our history since 1989. Ours is a cry of pain and we hope someone will listen," declared Jan Tamas, leader of the nonviolent movement against bases.

Finally, I would like to repeat the requests of those going on hunger strike:

"Suspending negotiations for one year, to open a deeper discussion on this topic within the Czech Republic, to get the position of the EU on this plan, and to wait for the position of the new US administration."

"To place or not to place the radar in the Czech Republic is a historical decision, which should be made only after a wide public discussion with the agreement of a majority of citizens. However, making such a decision in this poisonous atmosphere full of mistrust would negatively influence Czech society for a long time. Hope for freedom and real democracy, which we gained after the Velvet Revolution, would be changed again to a feeling of mistrust in institutions, a feeling of helplessness and betrayal."
