Press Release of the Nonviolence Movement against the Radar

Prague - April 4, 2009 obama_in_prague.happening_against_star_wars.jpg

Members of the Nonviolence Movement have hung a banner from one of Prague's bridges just hours before planned visit of US President Barack Obama. The banner read "Yes, we can - say no to U.S. military base" in reference to Obama's election campaign slogan.

"We are welcoming US President in Prague and his policy of nuclear disarmament," said Jan Tamas, spokesman of the movement, "But at the same time we have shown our firm intention to not accept military troops of foreign powers on our territory."

The Nonviolence Movement supports Obama's nuclear disarmament policy and asks him to stop the "Star Wars" in Eastern Europe.

On the 4th and 5th of April, on the occasion of President Obama's visit, the movement is organizing many activities to show that there is great opposition in the Czech Republic against the installation of a permanent US military base. One of those activities is a happening "The Invisibles" that will take place on Sunday morning. "The Invisibles are more than 70% of the Czech population who do not want the military radar base. The Invisibles are the 99% of the worldwide population that does not want wars and aspires to peace," added Tamas.

CHE OBAMA RISPETTI LA DEMOCRAZIA IN EUROPA PDF Stampa E-mail
Comunicati Stampa

CZECHS ASK OBAMA TO RESPECT DEMOCRACY PDF Stampa E-mail

venerdì 03 aprile 2009
MEPs, members of the Czech Parliament, mayors, scientists of different European countries as well as tens of international organizations have endorsed a letter sent to the American President asking him to give up the Star Wars project, once and for all.

obama.jpgThe United States want to install a military base in theCzech Republic as part of their National Missile Defense project, also known as Star Wars. Even though, for more than two years, two thirds of the Czech population have opposed this plan, the US and Czech governments have signed an agreement for it to go ahead.   A letter signed by its promoters, humanists Jan Tamas and Giorgio Schultze, as well as 46 Czech MPs, amongst which are Jiri Paroubek, former Prime Minister and current General Secretary of the Social Democratic Party, and Vojtěch Filip, General Secretary of the Communist Party.   Other signatories include Jan Kavan, former President of the UN General Assembly, Jan Neoral, spokesperson of the League of Mayors Against the Radar, many MEPs, and Belgian senators. International organizations among the signatories include Greenpeace, Mayors for PeaceGlobal Network against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space.   tami.jpgJan Tamas, President of the Humanist Party of the Czech Republic and spokesperson for the Nonviolent Movement Against the Bases, says "we recognize that President Obama is making an effort to diminish nuclear arsenals and is looking for a diplomatic way to face international tensions, but we ask that he listens to the voice of the vast majority of the Czech population and finally gives up on Star Wars."   According to Giorgio Schultze, European Spokesperson for New Humanism, the National Missile Defense Project has created a fracture inside Europe and new tensions with Russia. "Security issues are important, but they can only be solved if the United States, Europe andRussia collaborate. A project which really aims for international security cannot be solely military."
During Barack Obama's visit to Prague, on Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5, new nonviolent protests are scheduled. A press conference will take place during Saturday's demonstration at noon on "Most Legii" bridge in the center of Prague.
Attached is the text of the letter and the list of signatories.

sciopero_della_fame.jpg The protest in the Czech Republic against the installation of US military bases, part of the NMD system also known as Star Wars, had brought two young activists to start a hunger strike in May 2008.

The two humanists, Jan Tamas and Jan Bednar ended their hunger strike after 21 days. From that day on, every day, for one day, a celebrity went on a relay fast. Among the protesters were scientists, academics, actors, directors, sportspeople and Parliament members coming from different parties. They included actress, Anna Geislerova, director Zdenek Troska, scientist Peter Pokorny and Lubomír Zaorálek, Vice President of the Czech Parliament.

"More than 300 persons participated in this protest, it is the most significant protest after the Velvet Revolution in 1989," Jan Tamas declared. "The fall of the government represents a victory of democracy for us, that's why we decided to suspend the relay hunger strike."

ATHENS: GRENADE THROWN AT DISARMAMENT MTG. PDF Stampa E-mail

giovedì 26 febbraio 2009

On February 24, 10:00 p.m., in Athens, a grenade was thrown at the offices of the "Immigrants' place" in Tsamadou Str. at Exarheia.
At that moment a meeting was taking place, organized by "Conscientious Objectors" organization with the participation of others such as "World Without Wars & Violence" and Amnesty International.Disarmament, was the issue being discussed.
More than 30 people were attending. By pure luck the grenade did not exploded inside the building as planned and for this reason there were no casualties
This attempt against the lives of the members of the organizations and the rest of the present activists does not appear to be an individual incident. It seems more as part of a plan of an undercover terrorist organization with a clear will of provoking a huge wave of violence.
"Our society is looking for visions, for nonviolent solutions to provide dynamic and essential answers to today's crisis. It is evident that the society is coming together by understanding the dead-end of violence and is planning the steps that will gradually paralyze the mechanisms that are producing violence," declared Klokas Konstantinos, spokesperson for "World Without Wars & Violence", Greece.
